Soil Nail Wall Design Practice in USA
The use of soil nail walls to support excavations in soil and soft rock has been increased significantly in the USA in the past few decades due to the advantages of its low cost and easy construction, particularly for the highway projects with excavations and widening of roadways. FHWA Geotechnical Engineering Circular No. 7 (GEC 7) provides very detailed guidance and procedures for the soil nail wall design, however, actual design could be affected by design tool used. In this paper, as a comparison, soil wall designs using dedicated soil nail wall design software, limit equilibrium method (LEM) software and advanced numerical software are performed for internal stability and overall stability. It indicates that commercial LEM slope stability software with advanced slip surface search and optimization has advantages over conventional dedicated nail wall design software and should be used in the routine design. For high and critical soil nail wall design, numerical analysis is recommended to perform stress-strain analysis and stability evaluation.
