Antwerp: A Modern City with a Significant Historic Heritage
Abstract Antwerp (Antwerpen) is the name of the port, the city, the borough and the province (county), situated in the northern part of Belgium, bordering the Netherlands. The name “Antwerpen” (Antwerp) is derived from the designation given to the first settlement “aan de were’ (at the wharf). Located on the river Schelde (Scheldt) south of the Delta area, it is near the mouths of the rivers Schelde, Maas (Meuse) and Rhine. North of the same Delta is the port and city of Rotterdam. Antwerp’s immediate hinterland covers the Walloon part of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Ruhr and Saar areas in Germany. During recent decades, the commercial port of Antwerp has developed into an important industrial center as well.
