Analysis and Graphic Recreation of the House of Venus in Volubilis (Morocco). Architecture from Archeology
The remains of the Roman city of Volubilis, in Morocco, are the best preserved in North Africa. Since the beginning of the 20th century, its urbanism, its monumental spaces, its domus, etc. have been important objects of study.
Most of these investigations have been approached from a historical or archaeological point of view, taking the form of texts accompanied by photographs and schematic graphic representations of the preserved remains. There are no purely architectural studies to understand the spaces that were erected on those archaeological remains, neither to explain how the people who lived in the past lived and perceived them.
Within the subject Infografía y Patrimonio in the School of Architecture of Granada we have been using Volubilis as a reference for eight years. Our students learn to interpret the Archeological Heritage from an architectural point of view and then, they try to recreate the disappeared architectural spaces from an experiential and perceptive perspective.
This paper presents some of the results obtained around the House of Venus. We consider that the analysis, reconstructive hypotheses and images generated by our students constitute an interesting contribution to the knowledge of this archaeological vestige and to its social dissemination.
