Since the last decades Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) has been recognized as a very important and rapidly growing area of research and application in the domain of sustainable development and spatial planning. The objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of the SEA, exploring its implementation across the different European countries and focusing on the different sectors of application. Starting from a deep state-of-the-art review, the article also highlights open questions and research needs, which allow to identify possible future recommendations.
