A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
History of Medicine and Planimetric Analysis
The adequate analysis of several historical floor plans, and the production of up-to-date floor plans in the case study we present, contributed in a substantial way and led to novel conclusions in an academic field in which it is not common for researchers from the field of Architecture to be involved in; the History of Medicine. We are not referring to the part of this discipline that deals specifically with the history of hospital architecture, in which, evidently, there is much that architects can contribute to, although that was the area in which this research was initially developed. The contributions made in this field supposed a substantial change in the previous hypotheses on the formal evolution of the hospital analysed, being this of such magnitude that it transcended the architectural, and even affected the previous theories about the treatment of the disease that said hospital dealt with. Therefore, it was necessary to make a critical analysis of them, and to set out in the research conclusions the review of settled and widespread ideas about the treatment and social consideration of leprosy over the centuries. Hypothesis that has finally been positively considered amongst researchers of the History of Medicine. It is therefore another case in which the positive effects produced by the synergies between different fields of research are confirmed, and support the claims for the need to have research teams that use graphic documentation, with researchers who adequately handle its language.
