Structural Reliability Assessment of Highway Bridges Using Visual Inspection Data
Visual Inspection of bridges is performed regularly to rate and record the condition states of the bridge elements. The visual inspection results provide useful information that can be integrated with conservative assumptions into the safety evaluation of bridges. An accurate evaluation method defined as the reliability analysis expresses the load and resistance of members in their probabilistic nature. This paper presents an approach for translating and incorporating the Visual Inspection data obtained from the Ontario Structures Inspection Manual into the reliability-based evaluation of bridges. The three inspection levels outlined by the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code are employed for defining the degree of confidence in the condition state rating of the bridge elements. The application of the approach is illustrated on a 45.72 m segment of Harbour bridge located in Saint John, New Brunswick.
