Attenuation of Shock Wave Through Granular Materials
Abstract This chapter presents the laboratory-scale experimental technique to study the performance of the sand barrier systems in mitigating shock waves. Granular materials like dry sand particles (fine and coarse) and spherical-shaped glass beads are used as the infill granular material in the barrier systems. The process of shock wave attenuation by the sand barrier, with and without the geotextile facing formwork is examined. An encapsulated sand barrier model is developed and tested in the laboratory using a shock tube. The present chapter illustrates the capability of the sand particles in attenuating the shock wave and further assesses the role of geotextile as a facing formwork. The chapter also examines the stability of the barrier system through the acceleration response incurred during shock impact loading.
