Active Seismic Control of Structures Using Pole Placement Technique
This paper presents the study conducted on two basic aspects of active vibration control of structures under seismic loading, viz., modeling and control design. The modeling process includes the derivation of discrete differential equations of motion of the structure and its state-space realization. In the state-space realization, a model of the ten-story shear building has been considered. The model includes tendons installed at various stories of the building. Positions of tendons have been altered to arrive at most efficient system having combinations of the tendons where the reduction in the responses is high and the control force required is the least. In control system design, the pole placement technique has been efficiently developed to reduce the response of the building subjected to seismic excitation. A numerical simulation of the ten-story regular shear building has been performed in Simulink (Matlab) using El Centro time history excitation. The simulation results are highly encouraging.
