Analysis of the main factors causing incidents and accidents at dams, evaluation of the reliability indices of dams
Conclusions 1. The relative significance and rate of effect on the reliability of various types of dams of such main factors as loss of stability of the foundation, seepage in the dam, through its foundation, and along abutments, temperature and shrinkage cracks, alternate freezing and thawing, corrosiveness of the medium, flow of water over the crest, etc., were established. 2. The probability density functions of the time of accident-free, incident-free, and failure-free operation of dams were established for the first time and the reliability indices at various periods of their operation with differentiated consideration of incidents and accidents were estimated. 3. The results obtained make it possible during design, construction, and operation of dams to draw attention to the main causes of destruction for each type of structure and to take technical and organizational measures for increasing their reliability. 4. The proposed reliability indices of various types of dams can be used for substantiating the composition, duration, and frequency of on-site observations, when designating the necessary service life of the measurement instruments used in these observations, and also in problems of economic justification of on-site observations on dams.
