Proportionality in the Architecture of Dom Bellot
Abstract This paper explores the proportional system of the Benedictine monk and architect Dom Paul Bellot o.s.b. (Ordo Sancti Benedicti). A review of the geometrical study of the chapel of the former Augustinian College in Eindhoven (NL), built by Dom Bellot in 1922–1925 is presented. An analysis of the cross-section of this chapel shows the use of the Golden Section angle of almost 60° in combination with triangular tracing. Dom Bellot used this set angle to construct harmonic geometry in an effort to create universal beauty and to divide greater parts into smaller parts in a harmonious way. Dom Bellot also used his Golden Section angle to build his diverse arches in the chapel.
