Application of an Improved GABC Algorithm for Optimal Power Flow Problem Incorporating Renewable Energy Sources
At present, fossil fuels are used extensively for generation of electricity in most of the countries. Recognizing ecological concerns such as air pollution and global warming, there is gradual shift toward use of clean renewable energy technologies. In this paper, an optimal power flow model of a power system, which incorporates wind farms and solar PV system connected to grid, dominated by thermal power plants, is presented. The uncertainty associated with availability of wind speed, solar irradiance is suitably modeled considering the information reported in recent studies. Two different case studies are presented in this paper, namely (i) system consisting of doubly fed induction generator-based wind farm, solar and thermal energy sources (ii) system consisting of wind farm with induction generators and thermal power plants. An optimization problem is solved by improved global best artificial bee colony algorithm (IABC) which is implemented on modified IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus systems. The results obtained by IABC algorithm are compared with the results available in recent studies. It is observed that the overall cost of system operation is optimum when the optimization problem for two cases is solved by using IABC algorithm.
