Artificial Intelligence and Data in Civil Engineering
Data and artificial intelligence are starting to have an impact on the civil engineering industry. This chapter will provide an overview of data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning and provide practical guidance on how to use these technologies to deliver complex engineering designs. Drawing from the author’s experience as a consultant engineer and data scientist, the process of data science is explained in the context of civil engineering and a number of applications are described. Furthermore, a case study on Vessel Impact Analysis for the Thames Tideway Tunnel demonstrates how the design process can be augmented using data science to deliver a complex design using a substantial data model.
