Numerical determination of rotational restraint of cold-formed Z-purlin according to EC3
Abstract The cold-formed purlin receives both lateral and rotational restraints from the trapezoidal sheeting. The rotational stiffness C D can be determined by calculation methods recommended in Eurocode 3-1-3, but only in limited cases, otherwise through experiments and calculations. An advanced numerical model of the sheeting to purlin connection was used to simulate the advised standard test. The results from the FEA model were consistent to a high degree with the experimental values. To show the significant influence of C D stiffness on the lateral-torsional resistance the calculations were performed for single span Z-purlin subjected to the uplift load. The EC3 recommendations provide designers with significant differences in the resistance of cold-formed purlins calculated with the use of C D stiffness value obtained from different formulae.
