Strength and Compressibility Characteristics of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Soil
Kuttanad clay is extensively found in the Kuttanad region of Kerala, India. This type of clay exhibits unfavorable geotechnical properties such as high compressibility, low shear strength, and a high percentage of organic matter. To address these challenges, the reinforced earth technique is being considered as an effective ground improvement method due to its cost-effectiveness, adaptability, and reproducibility. Geotechnical engineers encounter difficulties in designing foundations in clayey soils due to poor bearing capacity and excessive settlement. The current paper aims to conduct a comprehensive study on Kuttanad clay by incorporating glass fibers. The objective is to enhance the strength parameters of treated clayey soils through the random distribution of glass fibers as a reinforcement material. Although some research has been conducted on various types of soils, the investigation on the use of glass fibers as reinforcement material remains limited in comparison to other soil reinforcing materials. Moreover, the concept of randomly distributed glass fibers as reinforcements is intriguing due to the absence of potential planes of weakness that can develop parallel to oriented reinforcement. To address these gaps, a series of tests were performed on untreated soil collected from Kavalam, Kuttanad. These tests included sieve analysis, hydrometer analysis, Atter-berg's limits, specific gravity, standard Proctor test, consolidation test, and unconfined compressive strength tests. Subsequently, standard Proctor tests, consolidation tests, and unconfined compressive strength tests were conducted on the treated soil samples. The study site chosen for soil sampling is located in Kavalam, Kuttanad. By analyzing the effects of different percentages of glass fiber reinforcement on the soil, this research aims to provide valuable insights into the behavior of Kuttanad clay. The findings from this study will contribute to the understanding of soil improvement techniques and help address the challenges associated with clayey soils in the Kuttanad region.
