Empirical comparison of tour- and trip-based truck travel demand models
Abstract Findings from empirically comparing the performance of the tour- and trip-based truck travel demand models are documented in this paper. The tour-based model was developed based on micro-simulation which consists of number of submodules such as departure time choice, next-stop destination choice, stop duration, and next-stop purpose choice. For the trip-based model, discrete choice model was utilized in estimating destination choice behaviors of trucks. The accuracy and applicability of the two models were evaluated using data collected from trucks traveling in Seoul metropolitan area in Korea. The accuracy of these two models were comparable while the applicability of the tour-based model is significantly wider than that of the trip-based model. The tour based model required greatly more data in calibrating the model parameters and has more complex structure compared to trip-based model. Discussion of the pros and cons of these models are also documented in the paper.
