Disruption of Construction Industry During COVID-19 Pandemic—A Case Study from Ernakulam, Kerala, India
The wide spread of COVID-19 has generated unforeseen obstacles as well as unpredictable financial consequences. The construction industry was far different from other industries which require an onsite involvement of all the project members. It was important to know how the building sector would deal with this unexpected condition. The building sector makes a significant contribution to Gross domestic product, the slowdown triggered a global recession and economic downturn. The COVID-19 created huge impact on construction sectors causing most of them to stop their ongoing projects, but the work from home switch made the design engineers to strive through it. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 on the building industry at Ernakulam district of Kerala. For this, a Delphi study involving all main stakeholders within the construction industry involving project managers, design engineers, site execution engineers, planning engineers, field workers, and supervisors were conducted. The statistical study aims to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic affected construction industries and civil engineers also to study the effect of Work from Home system. The impact was calculated using the Relative importance index, and the study allowed for the identification of relevant conditions based on expert responses. The five point Likert scale range from 1–5 was adopted and transformed to relative importance indices.
