Social Accountability
Social accountability establishes fair treatment of workers through treaties, protocols, regulations, standards, and initiatives. This treatment primarily focuses on workers involved in resource extraction, manufacturing, and installation of building materials. Social accountability seeks to establish fair labor practices globally. This includes preventing child labor, forced labor, discrimination, and extended hours of labor. The right to establish unions and collective bargaining support social accountability. The International Organization for Standardization establishes standards that promote management processes in support of social accountability. Unlike other environmental impacts presented in this book, there are currently limited ways to measure and calculate the effectiveness of social accountability. Instead, social accountability is primarily established through goals and initiatives.
