Architectural Transformations in Downtown São Paulo in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s
This paper is part of the scope of the research: The metropolitan building: architectural responses to the process of metropolization in the cities of Caracas, Ciudad del Mexico, São Paulo, and Lima, Bogotá and Buenos Aires, coordinated by professors Fernando Lara and Márcio Cotrim. The research uses objects like prism buildings on platforms to understand the development of urbanism and the growth of the city of São Paulo, study the urban evolution from the 1930s to the 1960s. The appearance of mixed-use buildings is understood as a sign of modernization in constructing the capital of São Paulo. As an object of analysis that characterizes this new style of building, working, and living in the city, this part of the research adopts the Galeria Metrópole Building in the República neighborhood, in the center of the capital of the state of São Paulo—Brazil. Part of the public center’s history that culminated in the building is recovered, proposing a relationship between the public and the private, connecting the surroundings to its proposal.
