Abstract In this paper a method has been developed to construct a reduced-order observer for a linear time-invariant control system defined by a state space description. The method developed uses the concept of generalized matrix inverse to construct the observer without presupposing the observer structure as well as on the form and rank of the output matrix. Of course, the system must be observable. Illustrative examples covering different cases of the output matrix are included.
