Integration of Building Information Modelling and Facility Management for Metro Rail Project: A Case Study

Facility management (FM) is crucial in the building life cycle since it accounts for 75%–85% of the total cost of buildings over their life cycle. Building Information Modelling (BIM) has the potential to replace the conventional techniques currently used for facility management purposes and to provide a more reliable, less labour-intensive and time-efficient way of facility management. Although the importance of BIM-enabled facility management systems is emphasized in the literature, there have been limited studies focusing on the application of BIM for FM of infrastructure projects. This book chapter aims to integrate BIM and FM for infrastructure projects such as metro rail projects. This study develops BIM-enabled FM model and applies it to FM of real-time metro rail projects. The developed BIM-FM model enabled asset tracking, enhanced data exchange and improved the handover process.
