Performance Evaluation of Single and Multiple Trenches in Screening Ground Vibrations
This paper presents the results of numerical investigations performed to quantify the efficacy of single and dual open trenches as a wave barrier. The finite element package PLAXIS 2D was employed to model and analyse the problem. The soil media was considered as linear elastic, isotropic, and homogeneous material. The steady-state ground vibrations were replicated by applying a sinusoidal harmonic load. The geometrical parameters of the trench were normalized by the Rayleigh wavelength to get dimensionless parameters. The results highlight that the normalized depth of the trench primarily governs the vibration isolation efficacy. The vibration screening efficiency of the dual trenches was found to be much higher than the single trench. The optimum normalized depths for single and dual open trenches were reported as 1.0 and 0.4, respectively. The dual trenches of normalized depth 0.4 were found to screen the vertical and horizontal vibrations by 80% and 79%, respectively.
