Flexural Behaviour of Reinforced Concrete Beams Retrofitted with Ferrocement
Retrofitting a partially cracked beam using ferrocement could be a beneficial method in developing countries where an intelligent material like a fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is costly and unavailable. In contrast, ferrocement could be a low-cost reinforcing element instead of rebar used to retrofit reinforced concrete beams and columns. In this paper, finite element analyses have been carried out to investigate the nonlinear behavior of beams reinforced with rebar and ferrocement. A finite element model of the reinforced concrete (RC) beam subjected to third-point loading is modeled using ANSYS and then verified with the past experimental results. The beam behavior has been analyzed in terms of the load-deformation relationship and stress in the concrete section. The analysis result shows that the beams retrofitted with ferrocement have superior performance, increasing the ultimate load-carrying capacity and ductility of the beam.
