An Approach to Conserve Birulia Merchant Town’s Heritage to Revive Its Imageability
Birulia, a historically significant elite merchant's settlement on the western bank of the river Turag in Bangladesh, operated as a thriving business hub and port centre in the late eighteenth century. This colonial town's perception and heritage identity, adapted to suit the local climate is deteriorating due to unplanned urbanization. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to comprehend the imageability of this historic merchant town and investigate the characteristics and components that survived to create the visual image. A detailed field survey with observational method and data analysis is conducted to identify the factors that construct the imageability of Birulia town. This paper unveils that these factors of imageability of the Birulia town's fabric, alongside its architectural characteristics, are currently facing the challenges posed by development, leading to alterations in its skyline. Moreover, Unplanned physical features are not in alignment with the historic colonial town and in turn destroying the image of its urban fabric. The outcome of this paper suggest that the Birulia town's heritage settings play a vital role in enhancing its imageability. Regarding this matter, implementing conservation strategies is crucial to revitalizing the town's imageability, as the distinctiveness of the town's image relies on the preservation of its heritage settings.
