The Architectural Heritage of Königsberg/Kaliningrad in the Regional Press During Perestroika
The Kaliningrad region of Russia, until 1945, a part of the German province of East Prussia, possesses a unique historical heritage. It intertwines the ethnocultural traditions of different peoples: Germans and Russians, as well as Poles, Lithuanians, and Jews. The process of forming an attitude to the cultural heritage of the past centuries in Soviet Kaliningrad underwent significant changes. It evolved, starting as a policy established in the first post-war years of completely denying the importance of studying the city’s history before 1945. Later it turned into an unprecedented growth of interest and even fascination with the German past during Gorbachev’s Perestroika. The article aims to identify the attitude to the architectural heritage of Königsberg/Kaliningrad, which the regional press of 1985–1991 helped form. Using content analysis as the main method, the article examines four leading regional newspapers and considers the processes of constructing the city’s new image in the consciousness of Kaliningrad’s residents. It concludes that it was during the Perestroika years that Kaliningrad’s residents became acquainted with and mastered Königsberg’s architectural heritage, simultaneously with the inclusion of the region’s pre-1945 history into historical memory.
