Passive Solar Heating/Cooling Strategies
The highest building energy demand comes from the heating/cooling systems. Passive heating/cooling techniques might be promising in building energy demand reduction. These techniques are mainly based on the utilization of solar radiant energy for the heating and cooling of living spaces with little assistance (or not at all) from mechanical devices. To select suitable passive heating/cooling technique, different factors discussed in the previous paragraphs have to be considered, such as climate, building space, and shape as well as understanding the technique, performance, and applicability. This chapter discusses the classification and working principle of passive heating/cooling techniques as well as the summary of recent developments in research. The research reviled that passive techniques have the potential to keep interior temperature within comfort zone and to reduce building energy demand, which can serve as good reference to architects, engineers, researchers, academicians, and students.
