Successful Implementation of Earth Pressure Balance Shield for Hanoi Metro Line 3 Project
The Hanoi Metro Line 3 (CP-03) project in Vietnam has an underground section of 2 × 2572 m tunnel length. The proposed twin bore tunnel will run beneath roads, residential areas with proximity to several structures and also expected to encounter several types of foundations. Geology challenges include face stability, shallow overburden, water ingress, abrasive ground and the mentioned obstructions. Two Earth Pressure Balance Shields (EPB) from Herrenknecht will be used for this project. The EPB has a customized design which is equipped with several technical features to cater for the project requirements and to overcome the expected geological challenges. The shield machine consists of heavy and bulky parts like the shield steel structures, cutting wheel and main drive system which post challenges in complying to the local transport limitations. There are several logistics challenges to transport the heavy equipment to the jobsite location through the busy public roads in Hanoi city centre. This technical paper will summarize the various challenges of the EPB shield-related works like machine design, transportation, jobsite assembly and maintenance based on the Hanoi Metro Line 3 project in Vietnam.
