Discrete Element Methods with Special Focus on DDA
In this chapter, the implicit (static) relaxation algorithm of “discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA)” belonging to the family of block-based CMs, is elucidated towards the simulation of rock mass as an assemblage of rock blocks exhibiting large deformation and separation. The block system may be discretized naturally due to the DFN in rock mass or artificially in equivalently homogeneous geomaterial. The force–displacement relation of blocks under equilibrium state is approached by an implicit iterative scheme intended to eliminate the residual or unbalanced forces and momentums. Another static relaxation algorithm of “block element analysis (BEA)” belonging the same CM family towards the simulation of rock mass with small (infinitesimal) deformation is expounded in parallel, for a better understanding of the specific merits and drawbacks of each member in block-based CMs.
