The Impact of Catchment Modeling on Hydrologic Reliability
Abstract Plate and Duckstein (this proceedings) advance the notion of “hydrologic reliability” which interacts with two other quantities, namely “hydraulic reliability” and “structural reliability” to give a measure of total system reliability. The hydrologic variable, discharge, which is the output of a selected catchment model, is the main ingredient used in the evaluation of the hydrologic reliability. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the factors that influence the accuracy of discharge estimates by catchment models. It is argued that as long as the accuracy of forecasts generated by such models is questionable, we may wish to exercise caution in accepting the computed value for the hydrologic reliability which is used to give us the overall reliability of a water resources system.
