Back Analyses of Jack-up Rig Penetration for Punch Through Case
Seabed stability and geotechnical engineering analysis are very crucial for jack-up barge setup. Prior to jacking at the location, estimation of bearing capacity and spudcan penetration is required for approval of the jack-up barge. With the conventional bearing capacity formulae based on SNAME (2008) guidelines, punch through prediction for ‘strong over weak’ soil is a big challenge. This paper presents punch through case of a Jack-up barge, SEP 450 deployed on Calcarenite and dense sand underlain by loose sand. Punch though was predicted using the conservative design parameters. To simulate the actual soil conditions and obtain approval for the barge setup, design parameters were re-assessed with back estimation of soil strength using the existing penetration records. FEM analysis was carried to evaluate soil resistance against the pre-load of the barge. With the FEM analysis and back estimation parameters, punch through risk was ruled out at this location.
