A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The segregation of land use into residential, commercial, and industrial zones was introduced in the early twentieth century. Known as Euclidean zoning, it indirectly gave way to the rise of suburbia, encouraged automobile dependency, limited walkability, and eroded social diversity. Neighborhoods with mixed land uses and a variety of dwelling types help curb urban sprawl. This is to say nothing of the fact that they offer richer built environments and social opportunities to their residents. This chapter illustrates the merits and modes of mixing a variety of housing types and amenities in cities to create better urban environments.
