Corrosion protection of the Volgograd hydrocenter spillway gates
Conclusions 1. Gate parts exposed to the air can be advantageously protected by a resistant metallized coating which showed high qualities in 3 years of operation; on submerged gate parts cathodic protection should be used. 2. It was found from 4 years' operational experience that the proposed anode construction is sufficiently strong, even when the gates are ice-encrusted. 3. The implemented cathodic protection ensures a quite satisfactory protection-potential distribution over the gates' surfaces. The protection is simple in operation. 4. Application of the protection on an unpainted surface entails practically no increase in operating costs. With an electrical power cost price of 0.1 kopeck/kWh and a power use of 2 kW continuously during 6 months of the year, the electrical power cost for the entire hydrocenter comes to 8.64 rubles. In protecting a painted surface, the electrical-power cost reduces by 25–30%, but painting costs per year of operation rise substantially.
