The Effect of Corporate Board Characteristics on Environmental Innovation
This study investigated the impact of board diversity on corporations’ environmental innovation. Our sample comprised firms listed in the H-DAX index from 2010 to 2019. Using a principal components analysis (PCA), we developed a measure of environmental and ecological innovation. Our empirical study showed that board independence and gender diversity have a positive significant influence on environmental innovation. We found that the presence of independent directors fosters environmental R&D, which is consistent with the legitimacy theory. Moreover, consistent with the social role theory, our results highlight that executive female directors improve environmental innovation. This study presents several important findings and their implications for scholars as well as policy makers.
