Detection, Diagnosis, and Monitoring of Cracked Prestressed Concrete Bridges
Abstract A certain type of prestressed concrete bridge built in France form 1965 to 1975 may present a type cracking which is characteristic of insufficient bending strength. These bridges may be prematurely endangered by fatigue or corrosion of the tendons. Often these bridges need strengthening by additional prestressing. This article describes the stage that necessarily precedes such a strengthening, and that includes: a) the detection of deficient structures among all bridges in service according to the Instruction on the Inspection and Maintenance of Bridges of the French Ministry of Transport. b) the diagnosis based on in-situ testing, such as the weighing of bearing reactions, but mainly the decompression moment method. The principle of this method consists in progressively loading the bridges with trucks in order to find the loading case corresponding to the opening of the joint. c) the monitoring of the bridge, which may be necessary if the rupture by fatigue of prestressing wires in the joints is of concern.
