Functions of Lignin-Carbohydrate Complexes
Abstract In general, compatibility is used in reference to plasticizers, which render two synthetic polymers miscible for subsequent processing. Here, we use the term to describe polymers that act upon both lignin and polysaccharides. These polymers render miscible, at the molecular level, the hydrophobic and hydrophilic components in wood. Compatibility is important to the physical properties of a processed wood and wood components. Several actions of lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) enhance compatibility.
