Trusses are extremely efficient structures because they carry a variety of loads primarily through axially loaded members. Although trusses are studied in introductory courses, the linkages of truss mechanics via Virtual Work in Analysis Classes, and via finite element tools in Computer Labs, will increase a technical understanding, as well as broaden one’s visual literacy. Insights from structural analysis courses allow trusses to be distilled down to simple chords acting in tension and compression to carry bending, and simple forces in the web members to carry shear. Calculating the internal moment in a bent truss allows for changing that internal moment like that of a beam, to a C/T couple of forces at some distance (arm) from each other. This C/T couple insight will be helpful in explaining some structural behavior.
