A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
As committed countries have started their race to zero emissions by 2050, cities have to prepare and ensure access for all to clean, secure and affordable energy, and at all times. Investments in energy efficiency and sustainably managed renewable energy resources can only have beneficial effects. Renewables, the cornerstone of the energy transition, have conquered most cities of the world. They continuously break records of ingenuity and investment. Cities which carefully plan their future after the pandemic should invest in the renovation of buildings to radically increase efficiencies in the use of renewable energies and provide better homes for better lives.
This chapter offers an insight into the evolving energy production and consumption patterns and the concerted efforts to raise the bar of excellence and overcome national and supranational targets. Sustainable mobility and accessibility are fundamental for an inclusive society and for linking the first and the last mile of all urban journeys to global networks through integrated, smarter and cleaner transport. Connected electric vehicles will be essential for the shift towards post-carbon cities, making the most of digital technologies and speeding up the deployment of zero-emission alternatives.
