Tunneling Spectroscopy of High Tc Oxide Superconductors with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope
Abstract We present a brief summary of our tunneling measurements on La1.85Sr0.15CuO4-y and YBa2Cu3O6.91, including comments about preliminary results on the temperature dependence of the gap in the latter material. These were taken with a scanning tunneling microscope that operates at temperatures down to 10K in an ultra-high vacuum chamber. An important unique feature of this apparatus is the ability to exchange samples or tips without venting the chamber or warming up the microscope, thus giving a fast turnaround time. We also have the capability to break these samples in-situ at low temperature which we believe is important in obtaining a surface that is representative of the bulk and, in particular, minimizes the loss of oxygen.
