Dynamics of Phase Transition in Polymer Gels: Studies of Spinodal Decomposition and Pattern Formation
Abstract Gel is composed of network and liquid. It has been recognized1that a polymer gel is a kind of polymer solution,in which solute is a single molecule with an infinite molecular weight. Due to the cross-linked network structure of the solute, this “solution” exhibits several peculiar properties which are not common in ordinary solutions. For example, the concentration of gel depends on temperature. On changing temperature gel expels or absorbs solvent so as to attain the thermodynamic equilibrium. The macroscopic state, of gel is characterized by the swelling ratio α defined as α=(ϕo/ϕ)1/3,where ϕ is the volume fraction of polymer and ϕ0 is that when the network has a random walk configuration. Some gels under go a discontinuous transition between two phases with different values of α, which we call a gel-gel transition or a volume transition of gel.2–4.
