One of main differences between the limit equilibrium method and the characteristic line method is as follow: for the former, the yield condition is first adopted and then expression of the safety factor or limit load is derived according to the force and moment equilibrium equations, the corresponding extremum is solved for this expression including the slip surface and finally, the required result is obtained; for the latter, yield condition and extremum condition of the yield function are directly applied during the solution.
