Repair of a chemical industry jetty in Aquaba-Jordan

Abstract The paper presents the results of a two-year work on the inspection, testing and repair of a jetty in the port of Aqaba in Jordan. The jetty was found in a moderately to severely deteriorated state seventeen years after construction. Chloride attack in the splash zone and chemical attack in the deck were diagnosed. Petrographic analysis of concrete in the deck revealed signs of sulfate attack. This was correlated with the chemicals handed on the berth. A comprehensive repair plan was devised and executed with the use of PC blended with GGBS together with pore blockers in the splash zone. The stage was set to monitor the repair works including a location where a variation on the pore blocker in the form of calcium nitrite was introduced.

Résumé Cet article présente les résultats de deux ans de travail d’inspection, d’essais et de réparation de la jetée du port d’Aqaba en Jordanie. La jetée était dans un état qualifié de modérément à sévèrement détérioré, dix-sept ans après sa construction. Une attaque au chlorure dans la zone de déferlement ainsi qu’une attaque chimique du tablier ont été diagnostiquées. Des analyses pétrographiques du béton du tablier ont décelé des signes d’attaques aux sulfates. Celles-ci ont été mises en évidence au moyen de produts chimiques se trouvant en cabines. Un vaste plant de réparation a été introduit et exécuté en utilisant du ciment Portland. Dans la zone de déferlement, le ciment du laitier de haut-fourneau avec des obstructeurs de pores a été ajouté. Une fois cette étape atteinte, le contrôle des travaux de réparation a débuté et dans certains endroits, ces éléments obstruant les pores ont été associés au nitrite de calcium.
