Current and Future Adoption of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Applications in Construction Projects: An Industry-Based Perspective
Artificial intelligence (AI) and novel technologies are gaining traction in construction projects, yet the industry is still considered among the least digitized. A key challenge in effective AI implementation and deployment is the lack of clear roadmaps, processes, and guidance for the relevant technologies and applications. This paper addresses this knowledge gap. To this end, the authors: (1) conducted a thorough literature review to compile a list of 17 AI technologies and subsequently identified 25 related applications that are used in the construction sector, (2) administered an industry-based survey to gauge the current and projected future adoption levels of the aforementioned technologies and applications and developed scales to quantify the AI state of practice for technologies as well as applications, and (3) provided insights into AI drivers, barriers, and potential development directions. The results of this study enable construction stakeholders to deploy AI more effectively and efficiently in their projects. Ultimately, this research furnishes a better understanding of the potential of AI to enhance the performance of construction projects.
