Towards Sustainable Tourism with Variabile K: Community-Based Strategies for Urban Development
This paper investigates the repercussions of unsustainable tourism, with a specific focus on Naples and the nearby city of Ercolano. Examining the transformative impact of uncontrolled mass tourism on cultural and social identities, rising property prices, and the proliferation of short-term rentals in Naples reveals the urgent need for a holistic and community-driven approach. The study introduces the concept of a “both/and” managerial strategy, emphasizing the symbiotic needs of tourists and residents, advocating for a delicate balance between economic benefits and cultural preservation. Ercolano serves as an illustrative case, showcasing the potential for sustainable tourism development in socio-economically disadvantaged areas. The paper underscores the significance of multidisciplinary efforts, involving architects, urban planners, economists, and cultural operators, and introduces the role of social enterprises, exemplified by Variabile K, in fostering a socio-cultural revolution in tourism destinations. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of participatory architecture, community engagement, and tailored, collaborative strategies for achieving genuine and lasting sustainability in tourism, fostering a self-sustaining virtuous cycle between tourists and local communities.
