A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Sociable Smart Cities
In this chapter, we present the notion of the sociable smart city, the impact of smart cities in society and how a sociable smart city may empower and engage people, enhance citizens’ social interactions and improve cultural life. In our view, cities are not merely neutral territories used by people where the introduction of technology simply seeks to optimise global functions, utilities used and individual productivity. Cities’ character is formed by the people who inhabit them, and their culture is defined by their memories, stories and interactions. Hence, while all cities around the world provide similar facilities, every city has evolved a unique and distinctive character reflected in social and cultural life. In our perspective, a smart city should focus on people’s social interactions, welcome cultural and learning activities, allow citizens and visitors to explore the city’s past and present in novel ways and shape the future of their city. The chapter outlines niche aspects of the broader sociable smart city concept that have been identified via collaboration with other researchers, proposes a methodology for the introduction of technological interventions that advance the sociable character of cities and documents a number of case studies that follow our approach.
