Dynamic Behaviour of Wenchuan Sand with Nonplastic Fines
Abstract A conflicting result from previous studies for the effect of nonplastic fines on the cyclic resistance of sand is obtained from the literature. Sand deposit in real field typically contains silt content, which is a significant challenge for engineers to quantify the effect of silt content on dynamic behaviour of sand. To provide insight into the effects of nonplastic fines on the dynamic behaviour of Wenchuan sand, a laboratory parametric study of sand utilizing cyclic triaxial tests with a range of confining pressure, silt content percentage and consolidation ratio is performed. This study shows that the silt content can decrease the cyclic resistance of sand. Based on the experimental results, one formula is proposed to quantify the effect of nonplastic fines on the liquefaction behavior of saturated Wenchuan sand.
