Residential Thermal Comfort in Tropics – Bunker House
Abstract The bunker house is an exploration of a residential home design for the tropical climate that avoids the use of an active air-conditioning system on a modern high-standard of living home, based on adaptive thermal comfort model. It is designed to be semi-buried in the earth to maintain a fairly consistent indoor temperature, while maintaining the ability to harvest daylight deep into the home. Instead of attempting to reduce the outdoor air temperature, the bunker house target is to reduce the peak surface temperature on the internal surface of the roof, wall, floor and glazing in an attempt to reduce the operative temperature inside the house. The use of evaporative cooling was not considered for this project because it increases the risk of mould growth due to the higher relative humidity level.
