A Critical Review of Utilization of Sugarcane Bagasse Ash in Concrete as Partial Replacement to Cement
There have been rising concerns relating to increasing carbon footprint over the years. Two major reasons for the cause of increase in carbon footprint was due to excessive production of cement and inappropriate trash handling and maintenance of resources. These concerns resulted in a lot of studies being done on the use of sugarcane bagasse ash (SBA) in building materials. A thorough examination of the usage of SBA as partial replacement to cement in concrete is essential to comprehend the large scale of papers published in this field over the past two decades. As a result, this article summarizes the corpus of information on concrete characteristics upon incorporation of SBA, mainly focused on the fresh and mechanical properties. According to this review, SBA is a novel supplemental cementitious material. The workability of mixes with SBA depends on its fineness when compared to cement and can be attained by suitable incorporation of superplasticizers. Compressive improves when SBA content is in the range of 5–10%. Though its usage increases the porosity of the concrete, it has been proven that using SBA is helpful for improving chloride resistance of concrete and to decrease environmental problems.
