Multifunctional Assessment of Green Infrastructure for Sustainable City Planning
Green infrastructure provides numerous ecosystem services that protect the health of residents and enhance their quality of life in cities. Some sets of ecosystem services, called bundles, always appear together in time and space. Sometimes the maximization of one ecosystem service or bundle results in a decline of other services. Therefore, it is necessary to understand relationships among multiple services and the underlying mechanisms. Synergies are possible if multiple ecosystem services are enhanced, but trade-offs appear if services decrease due to the increase of others. In several projects, a framework for a multifunctional approach was developed and tested for the selected ecosystem services of recreation, climate regulation and habitat provision. Visions, objectives and individual measures can be derived or impacts on individual or numerous ecosystem services can be assessed. The paper presents one example to implement the framework in future sustainable city planning.
