A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Detailed Knowledge of Territory: Exploration and Army
In order to represent a territory, it is necessary to explore and examine it previously to get, somehow, to fully know and dominate it. In this way, the process allowing to obtain the detailed knowledge of territory begins, encompassing the different phases of exploration, construction and representation. The aim of this paper is to highlight some of the keys of the exploration phase that lead to the appearance of the first signs, a fact that constitutes a first step towards the graphic representation of the territory. From the beginning of time, the needs of the human beings have pushed them to move and discover the territory. Their communicative and technical capacities, evolved over time, help them to face practically any activity they need to develop (Ortega 1965; Hawley 1982). More recent authors (Dobbs 2013) refer to the curiosity proper to the human race as one of the principal causes for the exploratory process. However, it is most likely that it was a combination of different needs and curiosity what caused the exploratory fact to remain alive. The armies, always at the technological forefront, proactively become main actors in this phase of the detailed knowledge of the territory.
