Abstract This chapter deals with the strength and deformability of masonry materials composing the structure of the so called historic constructions. After some historical introductory notes, special attention has been given to the analysis of various strength features of these materials and of their components, as bricks, stone blocks, and mortars. The common peculiarity of all the stone materials, a strength in tension much lower than in compression, is analyzed in detail and a suitable tri-axial failure criterion is thoroughly discussed. These results are then applied to the strength evaluation of uniaxial compression strength of the masonry, composed by regular patterns of blocks and mortar courses, as function of the geometry and strength properties of its components. The study of the masonry deformations, both the instantaneous as the delayed, ends the chapter.
