Effect of supercooled water and suspended ice on icing-up of pipelines
Conclusions 1. Passage of supercooled water through a pipe causes regelative icing-deposition of loose spongy ice on the interior surfaces, with a fast growth rate. 2. When heat is lost to the atmosphere via the pipe walls, part of the spongy ice freezes together and the icing becomes double-layered. 3. To avoid regelative icing, it is insufficient to insulate the pipe from cold air; it is necessary either to prevent cooling of the interior surfaces of the pipe which are washed by supercooled water, or to eliminate supercooling of the water-which, however, is often difficult to achieve.
